The Sky Holds the Two of Us
This novel follows To Write Poems Is To Pick Up One’s Life, about a high school tanka poetry club. The narrator in the first novel is Narihira, a boy in his final year. In this sequel, journal entries of a new boy named Toki, who has a crush on Narihira, also appear. The book features plentiful dialogue, including the Kansai dialect of Narihira’s girlfriend Seira, and the club members’ one-line tanka poems pierce the novel like skewers. Layers of differing language tell a story of family problems and romance. <Miyakawa>
