The Lord and the Sea
This humorous picture book is based on a traditional form of Japanese storytelling, and the illustrations are strongly reminiscent of the woodblock prints of the famous ukiyo-e artist, Toshusai Sharaku. It is a large-scale nonsense tale, a seeming parody on Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea. The servants of a lord who loves fishing borrow a mysterious fishing rod from a master fisherman’s tool shed. The lord, who only goes after the big fish, catches a huge tuna but is pulled into the sea. What follows is a hilarious account of the lord’s rescue by the fishing rod, which houses the soul of the master fisherman expressed by bones and a skeleton. (Nogami)
