江戸時代に時刻を知らせていた鐘をめぐって物語が展開する。祖父が鐘つき役をしている新吉は、ある日、オランダ人植物学者ヤンに出会って友だちになる。長崎から将軍に挨拶しに来たヤンは、日本庭園を見たいのだが、行動の自由がない。新吉は知り合いの魚屋に舟を出してもらい、川や水路を通ってこっそりあちこちの庭園を案内する。絵には江戸の街並みや人々の様子がていねいに描かれていて、飽きない。ヤンが新吉の祖父からみやげにもらった鐘が今もオランダの街で鳴っているという設定は、読者の視野をひろげてくれる。（さくま）

This story is about a bell used to tell the time during the Edo period (1603-1867). One day, Shinkichi, the grandson of the bellringer of Edo (now Tokyo), makes friends with Jan, a Dutch botanist. Jan has traveled from Nagasaki to Edo to meet the shogun. He wants to see a Japanese garden, but he is not allowed to move about freely. Shinkichi gets his friend, a fishmonger, to take them on a secret tour of gardens by boat along rivers and canals. The illustrations brim with meticulous and riveting details of the Edo townscape and its residents. The concept that the bell Shinkichi’s grandfather gives to Jan is still ringing in some town in the Netherlands broadens the imagination. (Sakuma)
