My First Biography of a Musician: Fumio Koizumi
When Fumio Koizumi (1927-1983) was 30, an experience researching music in India led him to travel the world studying traditional music. After completing his time abroad, he taught at Tokyo University of the Arts while also sharing the joys of world music with the public, by appearing on television and inviting ensembles from Africa and Asia to the 1970 World Exposition in Osaka. He also took interest in music education in Japan, saying that Japanese traditional music should be emphasized as well as Western music. He and his students compiled a book about Japanese children’s songs, or warabe uta. Until his death from cancer at age 56, he poured his spirit into social activism, his research and his family.
