At a time when a woman becoming an artist was rare, Toshi Maruki overcame innumerable obstacles to become a compassionate, resilient painter. Then she began a collaboration with Iri Maruki to portray the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Iri’s hometown, in the Hiroshima Panels. The artists wanted the panels to belong to all, and they visited more than twenty countries to enable people to experience them. In addition, they opened a museum with the panels on permanent display. By rendering scenes where civilians lost their lives in manmade horrors—Nanking, Auschwitz, the Bikini Atoll, Minamata, Okinawa—the artists continually empathized with and memorialized the powerless.
