Many Ways Of Living! Illustrated Encyclopedia of Insect Metamorphosis
Of the 1.75 million known species of living creatures on this planet, over one million are insects. The author divides insects in Japan into three categories based on how they develop and introduces them in detail with text and photos. The categories are Archaeognatha, which are primitive insects that don’t metamorphose, insects that mature into adults without becoming pupa (65 species), and insects that metamorphose from pupa to adults (156 species), including swallowtail butterflies and rhinoceros beetles. Each description is accompanied by basic data such as the insects’ characteristics and where they can be found. Just looking at the photos showing the diversity of species and development patterns is fun. The appendix provides explanations of technical terms. (Sakaguchi)
