A Day in the School Canteen
Mr. Yamanaka is the school’s nutritionist. The menu for today’s lunch is curry and rice, salad, and jelly. He works together with seven other staff to prepare lunches for 450 pupils. This picture book is set in the school canteen and follows the stages in the preparation of lunch in a lively manga-style format. It is exciting to see the huge cooking utensils and large quantities of ingredients they use. In addition to cooking, we see there are many other jobs involved in preparing a delicious and safe school lunch, such as ensuring a healthy diet and inspecting the ingredients and the finished meals. With introductions to the staff and a map of the school canteen provided on the endpapers, the entire book is enjoyable. (Sasaoka)
