『夜空にひらく』
高校生の円人（えんと）は、アルバイト先で障害事件を起こし、「試験観察」の処分を受けて「煙火店（花火屋）」を営む深見静一の家で一定期間暮らすことになった。円人は幼い時に母に捨てられ、愛情を感じられない祖母とのふたり暮らしで、人を信じることができなくなっていた。しかし、深見の家族や職人たちと生活をともにし、店の仕事を手伝うなか、少しずつ心を開き、やがて自分も花火職人になりたいと思うようになる。引受人の深見も、ひき逃げの事故で４歳の息子を亡くす、という傷を持っていた。深見は事件を起こした無免許の高校生が自殺したことを知り、加害者の少年と親の心についても考えるようになって、補導委託制度の協力者になる決心をした。しかし、そのことで離婚することになり、妻と娘には遠ざけられていた。
深見をはじめ、何かと世話を焼く深見の母、あっけらかんと明るい住み込みの双子の職人、円人を深見に託した弁護士など、円人のまわりの大人たちはあたたかくやさしい。花火を見て思わず涙してしまう純粋さ、正しいこととそうでないことをきちんと見極めようとする芯の強さを持つ円人のキャラクターも魅力的で、エールを送りたくなる。円人の行動をきっかけに、深見と娘が和解する様子も描かれる。３年後に花火職人として歩んでいる最終章の円人の姿に、明るい未来が見える。（汐﨑）

Open the Night Sky
Ento Narumi, age seventeen, caused a major injury at his part-time job and was sentenced to probationary observation. For a period of time, he will live and work with Seiichi Fukami, who manufactures fireworks.
Ento was abandoned by his mother in infancy and raised without affection by a grandmother, so he has a hard time believing in people. But by living with Mr. Fukami and his workers and helping them, Ento begins to open his heart little by little. He begins to think he would like to be a fireworks specialist.
Mr. Fukami himself carries the weight of losing his four-year-old son in a hit-and-run accident. After learning that the unlicensed teenage driver who caused it committed suicide, Mr. Fukami volunteered to help rehabilitate juvenile offenders. But Mr. Fukami’s decision led to divorce, and his ex-wife and daughter have since kept him at a distance.
Mr. Fukami, and his mother who likes to help out, and his cheery live-in twin workers, and Mr. Iwakiri, the lawyer who referred Ento to Fukami . . . the adults around Ento are all warm and kind.
Ento himself has the sensitivity to shed tears over beautiful fireworks, and the character to tell the difference between right and wrong. The reader sympathizes with him and wants him to succeed. His actions also lead to a rapprochement between Fukami and his daughter.
This book ends with a scene showing Ento as a fireworks specialist three years later. He clearly has a bright future awaiting him. (Shiozaki)
