『マスク越しのおはよう』

新型コロナウイルス感染症が日本で広がり始め、一斉休校から分散登校、そしてマスク着用を義務としての通常登校になった時期の中学２年生の様子を、同じクラスの５人が章ごとにそれぞれの視点で語っている作品。
「マスク歴三年」の千里子（ちりこ）は、小学４年生からマスク登校をしていて、その後、友だち関係が理由で不登校になっていたが、全員がマスクを着用する２年生の登校日から登校し、過去の友だち関係も修復する。「ヒョウ柄マスクのプリンセス」の芹那（せりな）は、夜にお酒を出す店に勤めている母と７歳年下の妹との３人暮らし。貧困のため、母親のヒョウ柄のスカーフでマスクを作り登校する。医者を母に持つ小山さんは、芹那の母親が仕事に行くのは感染を広げている行為だと非難する。「風に吹かれて」の麦は、幼い頃家を出て行った母がコロナを心配して会いにきてくれたら顔がわかるようにとフェイスシールドをしている。しかし、母は会いに来ず、自分から母に会いに行く。「『別人28 号』主演」の沙織は、過去に髪型を理由にいじめられて以来、不登校になっていたが、別人として登校してみたらという亡くなった祖父の助言を聞いて登校する。「七匹目の子ヤギ」の美咲は、自分以外の家族全員がコロナにかかって、ひとりマンションに残されて不安な気持ちになる。パンデミックの不安を感じながらも、それを転機ととらえて生き抜こうとする思春期の子どもの変化がいきいきと描かれている。（土居）

Covid 19 spreads around Japan. School closures turn to partial closures turn to masking . . . which is when the students in this book are in the second year of middle school. The chapters are from their perspectives.
“Three-Year Masker” Chiriko has been masking since upper elementary school. Friendship troubles led to a period of truancy, but when her whole class dons masks to start this school year, she returns and reconnects with a friend.
“Leopard-Print Mask Princess” Serina lives with her mother, who works at a pub at night, and her sister, who is seven years younger. To save money, Serina makes a mask from her mother’s scarf. Classmate Koyama-san, whose mother is a doctor, claims Serina’s mother going to work is spreading Covid.
In “Blown by the Wind,” Mugi wears a face shield so that his mother, who left home in Mugi’s infancy, will recognize him if she comes to check on his during Covid. But his mother does not come, and Mugi ends up going himself.
In “Performance of Different Person #28,” Saori has been truant since being bullied about her hair. But heeding the advice of her late grandfather to “try going to school as a different person,” she returns.
Misaki in “The Seventh Baby Goat” is the only member of her family who does not catch Covid; she finds herself alone in their apartment feeling anxious.
While worrying about the pandemic, the adolescents in this book also try to use it as an opportunity and move forward. Their changes are portrayed with great care. (Doi)
