千愛（ちなる）は、心の中で「キセキのカルテット」と呼ぶほど、同じ学年の愛空（あいら）ちゃん、麻央ちゃん、風翔（ふうか）ちゃんと、「学童クラブ・くれよん」で過ごす時間を大切に思っていた。とりわけ、かわいくてダンスもうまく、はっきりとものが言える愛空ちゃんにあこがれていたが、靴下に穴が空いているのを指摘してから、疎まれているのを感じてしまう。話はかみ合わず、学童へのバスでも置き去りにされ、ますます言いたいことも言えなくなってしまったある日、愛空ちゃんは劇団に、風翔ちゃんはスポーツクラブに、そして麻央ちゃんも塾に通うため、学童クラブは3 年生でやめると宣言されてしまう。
３人それぞれに将来の夢があるのに、自分には何のとりえもなく、何になりたいのかもわからない千愛。３人が学童からいなくなってしまうことにショックを受けるが、やがて、ひとりでも行動できるように、また、他の子たちとも関われるように変わっていこうと決心する。そんな子どもたちの日々のいざこざを見守り続けている学童の先生や、千愛をたよってくる下級生たちの言動も、少しずつ千愛に自信と勇気を与えていく。
時には感情的に言い合ったり、泣いてしまったり、手を出してしまったりしながらも、自分の気持ちを何とか言葉にして、わかり合おうとする子どもたちの日常がていねいに描かれている。（奥山）

Chinaru really loves the time she spends studying and playing with her elementary school classmates Aira, Mao, and Fuka at the Crayon Children’s Club they attend after school. She particularly admires Aira, who is cute, a good dancer, and can speak clearly. After she points out a hole in Aira’s sock, however, she feels shunned as Aira won’t talk to her and leaves her behind on the bus from school to the club, and she can no longer say what she thinks. Then one day her three friends inform her that they are going to leave the club in year three, as Aira is joining a theater, Fuka is joining a sports club, and Mao is starting cram school.
Chinaru’s friends all have dreams for the future, but she doesn’t have anything to offer and doesn’t know what she wants to be. She is shocked to see them leave the club, but eventually she decides to change so that she can do things on her own and also makes friends with the other children.
Chinaru gradually gains confidence and courage thanks to the teachers at the club who keep an eye on the children’s daily troubles, and the words and actions of the younger pupils who depend on her. The book minutely describes the daily lives of the children as they become emotional and argue, cry, and lash out, and gradually learn how to put their feelings into words and try to understand each other.
