『ジャングルジム』
小学生を主人公にした５つの短編が入っている。「黄色いひらひら」では、ある日良太が学校から帰ると風来坊の親戚のおじさんが来ていた。定職につかず寝てばかりいるおじさんに良太は懐疑的なのだが、ふたりで時間を過ごすうちに、想像力豊かで、自然の美しさに気づき、親身に迷子の世話をしたりするおじさんに、だんだんひかれていく。「ジャングルジム」では、姉をいじめた子に、妹の小３のすみれが “ふくしゅう”を考え、ジャングルジムの高いところから飛び降りることでその子と勝負しようとする。「リュック」では、もうすぐ小学生になる一平が、離婚した父とふたりだけで暮らすことになる。いつも背負っているリュックの中のワニのぬいぐるみと会話しながら、一平は不安を抱えつつも、父との新たな暮らしと折り合いをつけようとする。「色えんぴつ」では、父が病死して以来、「おこりたいような、かなしいような、くやしいような」気持ちをいつも抱えているまみが、父のカバンの中にあった色えんぴつで父との思い出を描いていく。「からあげ」では、春木がお試し同居にやってきたおじいちゃんのことを心配する。どれも、ありふれた日常のスケッチだが、その時々に子どもが感じたこと、考えたことをじつにリアルに描写している。それぞれの子どもの個性が浮かび上がるだけでなく、登場する大人についても、ちょっとした言葉でその人の生きてきた道を伝えている。上質の文学作品といえよう。（さくま）

A collection of five short stories featuring elementary school pupil protagonists, by an author nominated for the International Andersen Award.
In “The Yellow Leaf,” Ryota comes home from school to find a good-fornothing uncle has come to stay. Ryota is skeptical about this uncle who has never had a proper job and spends all his time sleeping, but gradually warms to him as begins to notice his uncle’s rich imagination, awareness of the beauty of nature, and kindness to lost children. In “Jungle Gym” nine-year-old Sumire gets revenge on the girl who bullies her elder sister by jumping off the top of the jungle gym to better her. In “The Rucksack,” Ippei is about to start elementary school, but has to go to live alone with his father as his parents have divorced. He talks with his stuffed toy crocodile as he tries to overcome his anxiety and come to terms with this new life. In “Color Pencils,” Mami has been feeling angry, sad, and bitter since her father died, and she starts drawing her memories of him with the color pencils she found in his bag. In “Fried Chicken,” Haruki worries about grandpa, who has come to live with them on a trial basis.
All the stories are sketches of daily life, with realistic depictions of the children’s feelings and thoughts. In addition to the individual personalities of each of the children, we also get a sense of the adults in their lives. This is a literary work of high quality. (Sakuma)
