Snow Theater
A boy who lives in a snowy region gets into a tug-of-war with a friend, tearing Dad’s treasured butterfly guide. Without thinking, the boy puts on his skis and heads for the slopes. As he skis, he drops into a snowy hollow where he discovers some “little people” and a tiny theater. Spinning ballerinas, dancers in soft white dresses, snow-white horses, snowmen, and even a queen who makes snow fall… Before long, the boy is up on the stage singing along. Fantastical illustrations, all with snow as the basis, evoke the richness and depth of the snowy countryside. The ending, where Dad comes to get the boy, is full of warmth. (Okuyama)
