Aleutian Magic

A sea otter boy receives an invitation from the magician Polar Man, to an “amazing magic show” set for the summer solstice. The sea otter boy floats on top of his mother to the Aleutian Islands, where together they enjoy magic with polar bears, seals, and even cliffdwelling spirits. The magic makes scores of fish issue from an octopus’s suckers, and it makes whales jump and eggs hatch so that numerous birds come flying out. The seven starfish that the sea otter boy brought as an admission fee, turn into stars climbing into the sky, and Polar Man soars away on them. The phenomenon that the islands’ residents call Aleutian Magic is portrayed with immense imagination and power. (Doi)
