This science picture book covers the eleven months from the time rhinoceros beetle eggs are laid in the soil through the stages of larva and pupa, until they hatch and emerge from the ground. Realistic drawings accompanied by detailed explanations show the small larvae silently eating leaf mold, the fat larvae hibernating under the snow, and the process of creating egg-shaped cocoons and becoming pupae. The book also shares interesting research findings, such as how larvae form clusters attracted by the carbon dioxide they each emit, and the way pupae protect themselves from outside enemies by hitting their backs against the wall of the cocoon, causing it to vibrate.
