Welcome to the Sushi Restaurant! From Living Creature to Food
The author of this picture book runs a sushi restaurant, and here presents photos of a workshop with eight children (boys and girls from preschool through elementary school) in which he prepares fish including splendid alfonsino, conger eel, and squid, to make sushi. First, the children examine the whole fish, closely observing the fins, eyes, and insides the mouths, and imagining how they lived in the sea. He then removes the stomachs, contents of the intestines, and ink bag, and demonstrates the different ways of cutting, grilling, and seasoning the fish. Finally, they enjoy eating the sushi together. The children’s murmured reactions add to the sense of being present in the workshop, and we can share the sensation of the lives of these creatures becoming part of our own bodies. (Okuyama)
