『あおびょうたん』
「わたし」は、クラスの男子に「あおびょうたん」とあだ名をつけられ、父にその意味を聞くと、弱虫のことだと言われる。そして、父は、わたしに自転車と縄跳びの猛特訓をする。学校では、石黒奈知という転校生がやってきて、男子はナチグロというあだ名をつける。わたしは絵が得意で、運動会の看板の絵をクラスの中心となって描き、あだ名で呼ばれるのを自然に受け止めるようになる。そして、石黒さんと仲よくなる。主人公の「わたし」が、あだ名や自分自身や友だち関係について考える過程が絵からも伝わってくる。（土居）

The boys in my class nicknamed me Aobyotan (Sissy). I asked my father what it meant, and he told me it meant I was too weak and so he made me train hard riding a bike and skipping rope. A new girl, Nachi Ishiguro, got nicknamed Nachiguro (a dark type of stone used to make inkstones and black Go pieces), which I know she hates. Since I’m good at art, everyone wanted me to draw the posters for the school sports day, and I didn’t mind when the girls started calling me Byo-tan (Painter). I also became good friends with Nachi, and call her by her proper name instead of her nickname. The illustrations show the firstperson protagonist thinking more deeply about nicknames, herself, and friendships. (Doi)
