Vodník's Water House: A Czech Folktale
Vodník is a water monster who makes mischief and even drowns people. One night, a penniless girl throws herself into the river, and Vodník spirits her into his house on the river bottom. While helping in the house, the girls learns that many people’s souls have been been trapped in jars there—including the soul of her younger brother, who had gone missing. The girl releases all the souls from the jars and determines to leave and return to her own house. An illustrator based in the Czech Republic powerfully portrays Vodník and the beautiful underwater world, in this retelling of a long-shared legend. (Shiozaki)
