To the Children Living a Hundred Years from Now
This is the sequel to a three-volume photo picture book series called Even So, It’s Home, about people displaced by the 2011 nuclear disaster in Fukushima. Former residents of the Tsushima area (Fukushima prefecture) are introduced, along with their project to collect memories going as far back as 850 years ago, titled To the Children Living a Hundred Years from Now. Mr. and Mrs. Sekiba are a couple who have moved five times since the disaster, who now live in a rural town with some similarities to the one they left. Mr. Yoshito Konno, a former mayor, has been living in temporary housing while returning to Tsushima once per month to measure the radiation. He runs a study group focusing on radioactive pollution, and he works on the memory collection project. “Sometimes it seems that even our memories have been polluted by the radiation.” These poignant words by the Sekibas linger in the heart.
