東京から転校してきた級友はクラスでからかわれて元気がなく、主人公の少年の後ばかり追う。少年の父親も、妻を亡くしてから黙ってテレビばかり見ている。近所の人が夏祭りの準備に父親を誘いに来る。父親は山車作りの名人なのだ。級友を山車作りに案内すると興味を抱き、しだいに地元の子どもたちに馴染んでいく。落ち込んでいたふたりが、祭りを通して元気を取り戻す姿が大牟田方言で描かれる。「むしゃんよか」は「かっこいい」の方言。伝統的な祭り大蛇山の準備からクライマックスまでの描写がリアルで楽しい。（野上）
