Born in 1975, the author, Hidehiro Otake, has spent much of his life photographing the Northwoods of America. As a young man he fell in love with the works of nature photographer Jim Brandenburg. After graduating from university, he set off on a three-month adventure to the Northwoods, traveling eight days by kayak through the many lakes and arriving unannounced at Jim’s door. Otake stayed a week with Jim’s neighbor, the extreme explorer Will Steger, then showed Jim the photos he had taken and asked for his advice. The work recounts his growth through this experience and the thoughts inspired by his encounters with nature and people. (Doi)
