沖縄県西表島（いりおもてじま）の祖納（そない）集落にある、県内最古のかやぶき屋根の家の、伝統的な屋根のふきかえ作業を取材した写真絵本。屋根をささえる垂木にはマングローブの木が使われ、竹やヤシの繊維などを集めて準備する。そして、いたんだ垂木を交換し、竹にクーチというつる性の植物を編み込んで固定してから、屋根の上と家の中で人が連携してかやをふいていく。自然の木や竹を使い協力して屋根をふく村人の姿から、村の伝統をつないでいこうとする姿勢がうかがえる。巻末には、祖納集落や取材対象である新盛家（しんんもりけ）の説明あり。（土居）

A photo-picture book that records the rethatching of the oldest thatched-roofed house in Okinawa Prefecture located in Sonai Village on Iriomote Island. Villagers cut mangrove trees for the rafters and collect bamboo and coconut fibers. They replace damaged rafters, then tie the bamboo ribs in place with woven vines. Some villagers climb on the roof while others help them from inside the house as they rethatch the roof. The fact that the villagers reroof the house every six to ten years themselves, rather than relying on professionals, gives the reader a fascinating glimpse into how the villagers keep traditions alive. The appendices include a description of Sonai Village and of Shinmorike, the house being rethatched. (Doi)
