女の子や女の人が、主人公やキーパーソンとなる世界各国の昔話を18 話収録。
食いしん坊でなまけものの娘は、怒った母親から家を追い出されるが、かくまってくれた宿屋のおかみさんがついたうそがきっかけで、お金持ちの騎士に嫁ぐことに。その後も、妖精たちの勘違いや娘の機転のおかげで、一生働かなくても幸せに暮らせるようになった（スペインの昔話「くいしんぼうのなまけもの」）。
あるところに美しい若者がいた。村の娘たちは、彼に結婚してもらおうと、着飾って彼のところへ。途中、水浴びをしている老婆が、背中をこすってくれと頼むが、着飾った娘たちは皆、冷たく断る。ンジガーリという貧しくてみにくい娘だけが背中をこすってやると、老婆の正体は若者の母親で、ンジガーリは若者と結ばれる（カメルーンの昔話「きれいな若者とみにくいむすめ」）。
キラウェア火山に住む火の女神が、老婆に姿を変え、ポイ（タロイモで作るハワイの主食）を恵んでほしいとやってくる。金持ちの家の夫婦は冷たく追い返すが、貧しい家のおかみさんはあるだけのポイでもてなす。翌朝、貧しい夫婦の家にはバナナとタロイモが山ほど実るが、金持ちの家では、女神の呪いでバナナはいつまでも熟さず、タロイモは干からびてしまった（ハワイの昔話「一ぱいのポイ」）。
たくましく、時にしたたかに、困難を乗り越える女の子たちの姿はすがすがしく、元気が出る。地域ごとの風俗の違いも興味を誘う。巻末に解説付。（笹岡）

A collection of eighteen folktales from around the world featuring girls and women.
A greedy, lazy girl is kicked out of home by her angry mother, but the woman innkeeper who takes her in tricks a rich knight into marrying her. Thanks to a misunderstanding and the girl’s own quick wit, she is able to live happily ever after without having to work (“The Lazy Glutton,” Spain).
Village girls dress up in their best finery and go to visit a handsome young man, hoping to marry him. On the way an old woman bathing in the river asks them to wash her back, but the well-dressed girls coldly refuse. Only a poor, ugly girl called Njigali obliges, and the old woman reveals her true identity as the young man’s mother and Njigali marries him (“The Handsome Young Man and the Ugly Girl,” Cameroon).
The goddess of fire, who lives in the Kilauea volcano, transforms into an old woman and comes begging for poi, a Hawaiian staple food made from taro. A rich couple coldly turn her away, but the wife in a poor household entertains her with all the poi they have. The next morning, the poor household produces a bumper crop of bananas and taro, but at the wealthy house the bananas never ripen and the taro dries up due to the goddess’s curse (“Abundance of Poi,” Hawaii).
It is refreshing and encouraging to see all the girls actively and sometimes shrewdly overcoming their difficulties. Notes on each story are included at the end of the book. (Sasaoka)
