JBBY News_09/24_ICBD 2024 with Suzy Lee

In March 2024, JBBY held its annual JBBY ICBD Festival to commemorate International Children’s Book Day. Authors, illustrators, translators, librarians and editors held workshops for 400 children, and the festival venue displayed 400 books, including the IBBY Honour List and the IBBY Selection of Outstanding Books for Young People with Disabilities. Participants enjoyed book-search games, sign language sessions, kamishibai (picture-card storytelling) and DAISY, a multimedia system.

The headline event featured Suzy Lee, the Korean author who won the 2022 Hans Christian Andersen Award for illustrator. Lee gave a lecture to an audience of 200, “Crossing the Border, Picture Books,” the kick-off for JBBY’s 50th anniversary celebration, and held a workshop for children, “Making Picture Books with Suzy Lee”. Participants in both sessions were captivated by Lee’s provocative method of creating picture books.
