Even Children Became Soldiers
During World War II, students who entered Okinawa’s Third Prefectural Junior High School had no choice but to go to war. This book traces how students aged 14 and up were made into soldiers without proper training. In April 1945, amid an artillery barrage, student soldiers were sent as infantry and communications troops to the front lines, and many died. Siblings with roots in Okinawa also appeared in the battle on the US side, symbolizing how Okinawa found itself utterly trapped. The written and oral testimony of students who survived provides a vivid account of the days they spent surrounded by death. Their personal stories carry devastating weight.
