A three-tiered lacquered box filled with traditional New Year dishes, such as shiny stewed black beans, a sweet rolled omelet, and dry-roasted sardine fry candied in sugar and soy sauce. The illustrations are so realistic that the colorful slices of fish cake, kelp-wrapped herring and other foods packed in each tier look like photographs. Rhythmical text introduces the richness of Japanese culture. Known as osechi, traditional New Year dishes are imbued with prayers for good fortune. Every ingredient, shape and color has a meaning, even the pine sprigs used for decoration. Over double-page spreads, the contents of the top appetizer tier, the grilled food tier in the middle, and the stewed dishes tier on the bottom are so finely reproduced, it makes the reader want to examine every detail.
