『やくそく ぼくらはぜったい戦争しない』
中学生になった「ぼく」を、ばあちゃんは「にいちゃん」と間違えるようになり、毎朝「いってらっしゃい」と送り、夕方には寒い玄関で「おかえり」と迎えてくれる。ばあちゃんは、1945 年８月６日の広島の原爆で、兄も両親も亡くしている。小さな女の子の心にもどって兄を待ち続ける祖母に心を寄せて、「ぼく」は「ぜったい戦争なんかしない」と約束する。３歳で被爆し、平和を求める児童文学を書き続けてきた作者の遺作。素朴で明るい絵に勇気づけられる。巻末には1990 年の作者のエッセイ「なぜ日本は平和なのか」も再録。（奥山）

Promise: We Will Not Go to War
A boy who has started middle school begins to be mistaken by his grandmother for her elder brother. Every morning, she sends him off with the words “itte rasshai,” and every evening she awaits him in the cold entryway, saying “okaeri.” Grandmother lost her brother and both parents in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. As her heart returns to that of a young girl awaiting her brother, her grandson vows never, ever to go to war. The author of this book survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima at age 3 and created children’s books calling for peace throughout his life. This title was published posthumously. The plain, bright illustrations impart courage. In the back, the author’s 1990 essay “Why Japan is at Peace” is reprinted. (OKUYAMA)
