Someone’s Melancholy
A collection of six short stories depicting the troubled daily lives of Year 2 junior high school students. In “Red Cocoon,” Akari has heavy periods and Shimosaka lives with his mother, an obstetrician and gynecologist. In “Three Hook Bras and Compression Shirts” Mana, who is into Boy’s Love manga, has large breasts; meanwhile, Manaka is uncomfortable with her female gender. Other characters deal with voice changes, feel ashamed of their thick body hair, don’t understand love, or think they know everything about sex . . . With their varying characteristics and preoccupations, the characters all have different concerns, but by acknowledging their differences and attempting to understand each other, they manage to get along.
