The Story Lily Can’t Remember
Lily goes to stay at her grandmother’s house during the summer holiday, and listens to her grandmother’s friend Fusako tell one of her stories, as yet unfinished, called “The Tale of the Polka Dot Handkerchief.” It is about a girl who wears a polka dot handkerchief as a scarf, but it gets blown away by the wind and is picked up by various people who make it into a dress for a stuffed toy, a tool for magic tricks, and so forth. Lily recalls a distant memory of her own, and describes how she saw a family of moles using a polka dot handkerchief, thus completing the story. The reader can enjoy the fun of making up stories through this unique friendship between females of different ages. (Doi)
