冬の訪れを告げる雪虫が飛んだ数日後、深夜から雪が降り始める。ひらひら舞うように、やがてもくもくと空から湧いてくるように降る雪の中で静かに佇む鳥たち。一夜明けたら一面の銀世界。見事な場面展開と情景描写から、初雪の日のうきうきした気持ちが鮮明に伝わる。雪が毎日降ったりやんだりする雪国の暮らしと、そこに生きる鳥や小動物たち。冬眠中のクマは子どもたちと日向ぼっこする夢を見る。陽の光が日ごとに強くなり雪が溶けて春が来る。雪国を舞台に冬から春に向かう季節の移ろいと鮮やかな雪の描写は秀逸だ。（野上）

A few days after the snow bugs fly, heralding the coming of winter, snow arrives deep in the night. Birds stand silently in the falling snowflakes, which first dance and then swirl thickly. When day dawns, the world is coated in silver. Each scene is beautifully developed, vividly conveying the excitement of the first snowfall. The pages depict the lives of people, birds and animals in Snow Country, a region of heavy snowfall in Japan. A hibernating mother bear and her cub dream of napping in the sun. The sun’s rays grow stronger each day until spring comes and the snow melts. This is a superb depiction of snow and the shift from winter to spring. (Nogami)
