Seeking the Secrets of the Bowerbird
As a child, this book’s author found a photo in a library of a bird that builds. In middle school, he learned that the bird was a type of bowerbird that builds a structure like a small garden shelter. Later, after becoming a picture book artist, the author decided to investigate more about the birds, and he journeyed to natural habitat in Australia, Papua New Guinea, and West Papua. His illustrations bring out the secrets of the bird’s building method, as well as details of the areas where the bird live. The author’s exchanges with residents of unexplored regions, as well as his observations of human interaction with nature, make this a thought-provoking work of reportage. (Shiozaki)
