Launching a Bag Company in Africa
Often, international aid results in dependency rather than independence. Chizu Nakamoto, however, sought to solve the problem of poverty by establishing equal business relationships. After many twists and turns, she launched her own company in Uganda. The company employs local women, many of whom are destitute single mothers, and makes eco-friendly products from colorful African prints to sell in Japan. The concept is to create attractive products that people want to buy and that connect the consumers with the producers, rather than relying on people to buy products out of pity. This true story of Nakamoto’s struggles opens readers’ eyes to what international cooperation should really be like. (Sakuma)
