We follow one day in a small family-run lodging house, learning details about how time was measured, preparations for travel, the members of the daimyo’s entourage, how to get into a goemonburo bathtub, and even the toilet facilities. We are given the prices in today’s monetary values, with a one-night stay with two meals costing 8,000 yen, a cup of tea 200-800 yen, a massage 2,400 yen, and the obligatory visits to Edo by a daimyo and his entourage costing about 400
