小６の七海の父は、七海が生まれる前に死去し、最近母が再婚した相手には、自分より２歳年上の幸がいる。七海は、なごやかな家庭を期待していたのだが、幸は生まれた時から体が弱く、ずっと病院暮らしでなかなか会えない。しかも母も新しい父も、容態の悪い幸のことばかり心配し、七海は放っておかれたような気がしておもしろくない。学校でも仲よしの友だちに憎まれ口をきいてしまい、何もかもうまくいかない思いが髙じて、七海はついついファンシーショップで万引きをしてしまう。それが見つかると、学校も休んでしまう。
そんなある日、七海は親には内緒で幸に会いに病院に行く。そして、幸の体があまりにも小さいことや、幸が想像していたようなわがままなお姫様ではなかったことに驚く。幸は妹が来てくれたことを思いのほか喜んで、ふたりでいろいろな話をし、ささやかなヒミツを共有することにする。それをきっかけに七海は、人は見かけによらないと思い、先入観にとらわれずに相手を理解しようと考えるようになる。やがて幸は昏睡状態になる。七海は、いつしか心の中にすむようになっていた幸のことが心配でたまらなくなり、雨の日は皆が平等に外で遊べないから大好き、と言っていた幸のために、逆さテルテル坊主をたくさん作る。「かわいそう」という上から目線なしに書かれているので、相手の立場で考えることについて、考えるヒントをいっぱいもらえそうだ。（さくま）

Nanami is in sixth grade. Her father died before she was born and her mother has just remarried. Nanami looks forward to getting close to her stepsister Yuki, who is two years older, but Yuki has been sickly since birth and rarely leaves the hospital. Nanami’s mother and stepfather are always worrying about Yuki, and Nanami feels forgotten. At school, something Nanami says causes a rift with her best friend. Feeling like a failure, she shoplifts but gets caught and stops going to school. One day, she decides to visit Yuki without telling her parents. It’s their first meeting, and Nanami is surprised to see how small Yuki is and that she’s not the selfish little princess Nanami had imagined. Yuki is thrilled to meet her new stepsister. Knowing only the in-hospital classroom, she urges Nanami to tell her all about school. They talk about many things and agree to keep Nanami’s visit a secret. After this experience, Nanami resolves not to judge people by appearances or assumptions and to get to know them personally instead.
Yuki falls into a coma, and Nanami, who has grown very fond of her, is beside herself with worry. Once, Yuki told her she loved rainy days because it evens the status quo: no one can go out and play, just like her. Remembering this, Nanami makes tissue dolls and hangs them upside down to wish for rain. The book offers many hints about how we can get to know others and learn to see things from their perspective.
