『乱歩えほん 押絵と旅する男』
主人公の「私」が、富山県魚津で蜃気楼（しんきろう）を見た帰りの汽車の中で、押絵を窓の外に向けている不気味な初老の男に出会う。押絵とは、布などに綿を詰めて半立体にして板状のものに張り込んだ精巧な細工のことで、男の押絵には、御殿のような部屋の中でまるで生きているような美しい娘と白髪の老人が浮き出ている。じつはその老人は男の兄で、見世物小屋の押絵に描かれた娘に恋をして、押絵の中に入り込んでしまったという。夜汽車の中で語られる奇妙な物語が迫真の絵で迫ってくる。（野上）

On a steam train home from seeing the mirages at Uozu, on the Japan Sea coast in Toyama, the narrator of this story meets a man nearing old age. Oddly, the man is holding a raised-cloth picture up to the window of the train. Exquisitely worked, the picture is stuffed and mounted so that it looks halfway three-dimensional. It shows a white-haired man and a beautiful woman in an elegant room; both people look alive. In fact, the man is the older brother of the man who is holding the picture, and the woman is someone the brother saw in the picture and fell in love with, so he entered the art to be with her. This spooky story told by Japan’s Edgar Allan Poe comes at you in realistic illustrations. (Nogami)
