1950 年代中頃、埼玉県秩父のたった３軒しか家がない山間の集落で小学生時代を過ごした作者は、家で飼っていたヒツジの毛でセーターを編んでもらうのを楽しみにしていた。春はヒツジやニワトリの世話、夏は家の中で飼っている蚕の餌に桑の葉を採り、秋には干し柿をつるし、冬は薪取りに行き雪の中でそり遊び。山里での四季折々の自然を背景にした自給自足の暮らしぶりが、少年の目を通して微細に描写されていく。春、毛糸屋さんがヒツジの毛を刈って糸にし、セーターができあがった喜びが情感豊かに伝わってくる。（野上）

The author spent his mid-1950s childhood in a mountain hamlet of only three households in Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture. Back then, he was looking forward to having a wool sweater knitted for him. Spring brought caring for sheep and chickens, and summer brought picking mulberry leaves to feed silkworms being raised in the house. Autumn meant hanging persimmons to dry, and winter meant gathering firewood and sledding. In this book, a life of self-sufficiency unfolds against the backdrop of the four seasons. In spring, a yarn merchant comes to sheer the sheep and spin wool into string, and at last, a sweater is made. The boy’s joy comes through vividly. (Nogami)
