“The A-I-U-E-O monsters are here, and tonight is their festival!” As the sun goes down, spooks gather excitedly. They party all through the night to the rhythms of a festival, and then they race away at dawn. There’s a cloth-like yokai called Ittan-momen that soars through the sky, and another called Amefurikozo that causes the rain to fall. Some 73 spirits from around Japan are introduced in the order of Japanese hiragana. The sounds and the wordplay beg to be read aloud. The illustrations are creepy but also somehow humorous. The back matter includes a chart of all the supernatural beings included, inviting readers to search for them in the pages. A re-publication from a new publisher. (Sasaoka)
