『クルルちゃんと コロロちゃん』（Kururu chan to Kororo chan）
背が高く、くるくる丸いめがねをかけたクルルちゃんと、ころりとふっくら、ツインテールのコロロちゃんは、同じ年で同じ学校に通っているが、あまり話をしたことがない。見た目も性格もまったく違うので、お互い敬遠気味だ。
でも、あるお天気のよい日曜日、広場で偶然出会い、リボン売りのおじさんから虹色のリボンを買う。次に現れたのは、たくさんのものさしを売るおばさんだ。おばさんは、ものさしでふたりの手を計ってくれた。手のひらの親指の先から小指の先までの長さは、コロロちゃんが14 センチ、クルルちゃんが16 センチで、両方足すと30 センチ。ふたりの小指を並べてみると、その幅は2 センチ！ さっそくふたりの手と指を使ってリボンを計ってみると、なんとぴったり1 メートル！ すっかりおもしろくなって、16 センチは1 クルル、14センチは１コロロ、1 メートルは1 リボンと単位を決め、広場にあるいろいろなものの長さを計り始める。迷子の子猫のしっぽの長さは？ ピエロのおじさんの帽子の高さは？ いちょうの幹の太さは？ そして、ふたりはすっかり仲よしに！

Kururu and Kororo
Kururu is tall with round glasses while Kororo is plump with pigtails. Although they are the same age and go to the same elementary school, Kururu and Kororo tend to avoid each other because they are very different in appearance and personality.
One sunny day, however, they bump into each other at the park and buy a rainbow-colored ribbon from a peddler. They run into another peddler who sells rulers and measures the distance from the tips of their thumbs to the tips of their baby fingers. Kururu’s measures sixteen centimeters, while Kororo’s measures fourteen centimeters. Added together, the total length is thirty centimeters. When they put their pinkies together, the width is two centimeters. Using their fingers, they measure the length of the ribbon they bought and find that it is one meter long. Excited by this discovery, they decide that sixteen centimeters is one kururu, fourteen centimeters is one kororo, and one meter is one ribbon and start measuring the length of everything in the park using their hands and fingers. How long is the lost kitten’s tail? How tall is the clown’s hat? How wide is the gingko tree’s trunk? By the end, Kururu and Kororo are best friends! At the bottom of the cover page is a life-size picture of a ruler, while on the last page are ideas for using parts of the body to measure things. The story is engaging while introducing creative ways for children to discover the fun of measuring different things such as the span of both hands or the length of a single stride. (Shiozaki)
