In the Birdhouse
Normally, we cannot see what goes on in a bird-house. The author, who has published many books on the shape of birds’ nests in different parts of the world, built a birdhouse against the window of his room, allowing him to carefully observe the be- havior of Oriental tits from the time they laid their eggs until the chicks fledged. On the fourteenth day after the mother had finished laying her eggs in his birdhouse, the author saw eight chicks inside. He sketched their growth in fine detail over the next twenty days until they left the nest. These lovely illustrations grace the pages of this picture book which presents a stunning portrayal of a mother and a father bird protecting and nurturing their young, and of the mystery of life.
