The Japanese black bear, inhabiting Honshu and Shikoku, stands alongside the brown bear of Hokkaido at the apex of Japan’s ecological pyramid. This picture book conveys the beauty of these bears and Japan’s natural landscapes through vibrant colour photography. In July’s Tohoku forests, we search for bears concealed in lakeside thickets. In August, bears are shown catching fish washed ashore and resting calmly amidst the rich natural surroundings. However, in recent years, contact with humans has increased due to the ageing and depopulation of mid-mountain regions. It has become more necessary than ever to maintain the boundary between human and bear habitats. When we look the bears directly in the eye in this book, we are encouraged to reflect on human behavior and consider ways to coexist with them. (SAKAGUCHI)
