The construction of Osaka Castle, starting with the main keep, was a major architectural and civil engineering undertaking. This picture book meticulously depicts the craftsmanship of the artisans who built the stone walls protecting it. Four hundred years ago, on Shōdoshima Island in the Seto Inland Sea, stonemasons used handmade tools like chisels and sledgehammers to cut massive stones. They then employed sledges and pulleys to load these huge stones onto ships for transportation to Osaka, where they are still conspicuously present in the walls of the castle today. Fold-out pages demonstrate the progress of the work over time, while the songs sung by the stonemasons and boat crews to coordinate their work convey a sense of their pride and elation.
