In the darkness deep at the bottom of the ocean where we cannot see, living creatures wait patiently for food. One day, a dead sperm whale sinks to the seabed. The first to notice is a roughskin dogfish. It tears at the whale’s skin with its sharp teeth. Once the dogfish leaves, snubnosed eels, spider crabs, sea urchins and other creatures gather. Even after all the flesh has been devoured, osedax japonicus come to eat the bones and lay their eggs. Through eye-catching illustrations and text, this picture book describes how a dead whale gives life to creatures deep below the sea.
