炊き立てのごはんのつぶが台所の床に落ちる。床には既にお米のつぶが落ちていたので、ふたりが話していると、女の子がやってきて、ごはんのつぶを踏み、ごはんのつぶはぺちゃんこになってしまう。お米のつぶはお母さんのスリッパでけとばされて部屋の隅に転がる。次の日の朝、再会したふたりはどっちが先にソックスに「あいたたた」を言わせるかを競争する。台所で起きるごはんとお米のやりとりが愉快で、絵からはその家に住む人間や猫や虫の物語も見えてくる。鮮やかな色とシンプルな線画の絵にも、ナンセンスな味わいがある。（土居）

A Grain of Cooked Rice and a Grain of Uncooked Rice
A grain of freshly cooked rice falls on the kitchen floor where it meets a grain of uncooked rice. They strike up a conversation, when along comes a little girl who steps on the grain of cooked rice and squashes it. Meanwhile, the girl’s mother inadvertently kicks the uncooked grain of rice into a corner of the room. The next morning, the two grains meet again and compete to see who can make a sock say “Ouch!” The conversations between the two grains are nonsensical and entertaining, and the illustrations portray the lives of the family, their cat and the insects residing in the house. The vividly colored, simple line drawings also impart a whimsical touch. (DOI)
