Usakichi Under the Desk
Ippei is alone looking after the house while his grandfather is out. When a storm comes and the power goes out, he takes a lantern and crawls under the desk. He sees a rabbit in the desk’s woodgrain, and he is instantly transported to a meadow where he meets a giant rabbit called Usakichi. Usakichi calls him Kyochi, and informs him that he has been waiting for him as the Witch has taken away his power to jump. They go to see the Witch, meeting a rat, some bandits, and a dragon on their journey to the summit of Mount Saihate. Readers can enjoy the fantastical adventures of Ippei along with appealing mystery-solving elements such as who Kyochi is. (Doi)
