Tetsu Nakamura: The Doctor Who Turned the Desert Green with Life-Giving Water
This is a biography of doctor Tetsu Nakamura, who revived agriculture and saved lives in Afghanistan by building irrigation channels. An insect lover from his youth, he was drawn to mountainous regions with rare insects, and he opened a medical aid NGO in the mountains of Pakistan and Afghanistan. During a drought from about the year 2000, he threw himself into building wells and irrigation ways to conserve water. He saw such efforts as a cornerstone of coping with the climate crisis, and he used traditional techniques that respected nature. Nephew of the writer Ashihei Hino, Dr. Nakamura was a reader and left many writings and lectures. This book uses photos, a timeline and other features to support understanding. (Okuyama)
