The Evolution of Whales
This picture book shows the evolution of whales, which have long been beloved in Japan. The blue whale is the heaviest creature alive today, and sperm whales have teeth. How did they evolve? This book goes back some fifty million years to a wolf-like ancestor of whales. The tail fin and repositioning of the nose for breathing are shown, as well as the difference between teeth and the baleen. The illustrations help readers to follow the whales’ evolutionary history. The image of a sperm whale next to a giant squid in the deep sea, and of a blue whale gobbling up Antarctic krill, are stunning and worth gazing at repeatedly.
