The Small Mountain Hut in Kurobe Gorge
Every June, a small mountain hut is constructed in Kurobe Gorge, Toyama Prefecture. In winter it is dismantled to prevent it being crushed by snow, and its parts stored in a tunnel. In just three days, the pillars are raised, walls attached, the roof put on, and the Azohara Hot Springs Hut is ready. October is the busiest season. Hikers can take a rest at the hut, soak in the natural hot spring bath, eat some delicious curry, and ease their tired legs. When the November frosts arrive, it’s time for the hut to close again. The hut staff smile and say “See you again next year.” This photobook vividly captures the natural beauty of the Kurobe Gorge in summer and autumn, and its visitors. (Shiozaki)
