Living in the Sea! Hanako, The Baby Sea Turtle
Hanako is a baby green sea turtle, an endangered species that lives in the sea in Okinawa, southern Japan, where she is loved by the local residents. This picture book starts with photos of Hanako swimming leisurely with her human and sea turtle friends. We see loggerhead turtles spawning and hatching, and the baby turtles swimming off to sea. On the other hand, photos of sea turtles caught up in ropes thrown away by humans, dead turtles in amongst the garbage washed up on the beach, and coral bleached by rising seawater temperatures convey a looming crisis. Readers will feel the importance of environmental conservation even more strongly as they learn about Hanako’s lovable nature. (Sakaguchi)
