食べものとしてのウニはおなじみでも、どんな生物かはよく知られていない。この絵本は、ウニの体、食べているもの、生殖から稚ウニの誕生、養殖、棘きょく皮ひ 動物としての特徴、世界のウニ、ウニの捕食者まで、圧倒的な情報量で詳しく紹介する。内容は専門的だが、南三陸の祖父母の家に遊びにきた男の子が、祖父から方言で話を聞く作りになっていて、親しみやすい。2011 年東日本大震災でウニがいなくなった後、ウニが増え、磯焼けを起こすまでを迫力のある絵で紹介する。特に大食漢のウニの口の絵はインパクトがある。（坂口）

Sea Urchins
We know the sea urchin as food, but not so much the creature itself. This picture book introduces us to many different aspects of the sea urchin, from its body, food, and reproduction to the birth of sea urchin young, aquaculture, its features as an echinoderm, sea urchins around the world, and sea urchin predators. It features specialist content, but we feel a sense of intimacy as the protagonist is a boy who goes to visit his grandparents on the Sanriku coast in Miyagi Prefecture, Tohoku, and hears his grandfather’s explanations in the local dialect. The sea urchins disappeared after the 2011 tsunami, but they have since been increasing and causing denudation of the rocky shore. The pictures are powerful, and the big-eater sea urchin’s mouth is particularly impressive. (Sakaguchi)
