２学期の最初の日、高校１年生の柳田強のクラスに、イタリアから交換留学生が入ってくる。レトロな丸眼鏡でラーメンみたいに縮れた黄色い髪の毛。名前は、マルコ・デ・ルーカだが、マルコと呼んでくれという。ホームステイ先が強の家に近いということから、強が世話係にさせられる。マルコは北斎が好きで日本文化やことわざや文学にも詳しい。英語も抜群で水泳はうまいし、丸眼鏡を取ったら意外にイケメンだったことから、女の子たちから人気になる。そんなマルコにクラスの厄介者の３人組が、あれこれと意地悪をし、当たらずさわらず適当にやり過ごしてきた強も黙っていられなくなる。強とマルコに小学校時代から同じクラスの波多野由衣や彼女の友だちの野上愛も加わり、マルコと愛がつき合ったりするなど、３学期が終わりマルコが帰国するまでの７か月が波乱万丈に展開する。
そして２年後、世界的な感染症のパンデミックに見舞われたなかで高校３年が始まる。マルコと遠距離恋愛中の愛は、イタリアの大学への進学を目指し猛勉強。由衣は推薦枠で志望のデザインスクールに決まり、強は大学の推薦選抜に落ちる。マルコと愛の誤解による破綻の危機なども絡め、さまざまな方向から人びとが行き交うスクランブル交差点のように、イタリア人留学生を核に、強の目を通して描かれた青春群像。強自身の心境の変化も軽快なノリで前向きに語られるところが痛快だ。（野上）

Scramble Crossing
On the first day of the second trimester, an exchange student appears in Tsuyoshi Yanagida’s high school class. The student is from Italy and has retro round glasses and blond hair with curls like ramen. His name is Marco De Luca. Since his homestay is near Tsuyoshi’s house, Tsuyoshi gets assigned to look after him.
Marco likes the artist Hokusai (1760–1849) and is knowledgeable about Japanese culture, sayings, and literature. He’s also good at English and swimming, and handsome when he removes his glasses, so he’s popular with the girls. Unfortunately, a group of three bullies picks on Marco, and Tsuyoshi, who until now had steered clear of the trio, can no longer stay silent. Yui Hatano, who has been in Tsuyoshi’s class since elementary school, and her friend Ai Nogami also get involved. Many ups and downs ensue, including a romance between Ai and Marco, before Marco returns home at the end of the third trimester.
Then, two years later, the final year of high school begins in the midst of a pandemic. Ai, who has maintained a long-distance relationship with Marco, crams to get into an Italian university. Yui gets admitted to her design school of choice based on recommendation. Tsuyoshi, unfortunately, does not get into university. Marco and Ai have a misunderstanding that threatens to break them up. Like pedestrians in a scramble crossing, the characters in the novel come and go all around Marco, as seen through the eyes of Tsuyoshi. Tsuyoshi himself experiences a change of heart toward the end that is immensely satisfying. (Nogami)
