著者の子どもの頃の愛称「イコ」が主人公の、『トンネルの森1945』に続く13 歳から22 歳までを描いた自伝的作品。戦争が終わり、一家は疎開先から東京の小岩に。1948 年、市ヶ谷にある女学校の中学２年に編入したイコは、通学電車の窓から、空襲で焼失した街の焦げ臭い匂いとともに復興しつつある東京の姿を目にする。道路標識は英語に変わり、ラジオの「進駐軍（しんちゅうぐん）放送」からアメリカの音楽がにぎやかに流れてくる。戦前は敵性語として禁じられていた英語の授業も始まる。アメリカ人の家を一度見てみたいと思ったイコは、女学校の近くにあった進駐軍の米軍将校の邸宅をのぞいていたところをメイドに見つかるが、２歳年上だという日本人のメイドは、こっそり屋内を案内してくれる。そこで戦勝国の人たちの驚くような豊かな暮らしを目にし、メイドが英語を話せるのにびっくり。英語を勉強して違う世界を見てみたいと強く思ったイコは早稲田大学に進学。英語学科でアメリカの女流作家について卒業論文を書いて卒業し、紀伊国屋書店に就職する。最初は雑用係だったが、編集部に来る作家たちにいろいろと刺激を受け、海外への夢が広がる。そして編集部の先輩から、ブラジルで日本語学校の先生を探していると聞き、ブラジル行きを決意し２か月間の船旅に出る。軍国主義の戦時下から民主主義へ。激動する日常に一抹の不安を抱えながらも、好奇心と冒険心で夢を実現していくイコの姿が躍動的ですがすがしい。（野上）

Sequel to The Tunnel Through the Woods, 1945, this book features Iko aged 13–22 (Iko was the Andersen-winning author’s childhood nickname). World War II ends, and Iko’s family moves from their refuge in Chiba to Koiwa, suburban Tokyo. In 1948, Iko enters girls’ school in Ichigaya; on the train to school, she smells the charred odor of neighborhoods burned in air raids even as she witnesses the rebuilding of Tokyo. English appears on signs, and the occupiers broadcast American music on the radio. Once prohibited as the enemy’s language, English becomes a new class at school.
Eager to see an American’s house, Iko peeks at a commissioned officer’s residence near the school. Iko gets caught by a maid, but the maid, who is Japanese and two years older, shows Iko inside. Iko is amazed by the officer’s lifestyle—and by the English ability of the maid, who has not gone to high school. Determined to learn English and see the world, Iko attends Waseda University. In the English department, she writes her thesis on a female American author, and after graduation, she works at the Kinokuniya bookstore and publishing house. Assigned odd jobs, she admires the authors who visit the editorial department and yearns to travel. She hears from her senior that a Japanese school in Brazil is seeking a teacher. Iko decides to go to Brazil and spends two months traveling there by ship.
From wartime militarism to democracy: Though shaken by the changes around her, Iko’s curiosity and adventurous spirit nonetheless lead her to pursue her dreams. Her story is thrilling. (Nogami)
